Terran Federation Morning Star Mk.1 Super Heavy Tank

The very largest of the tanks found in the Terran Federation armory are classed as "Super Heavy".  These vehicles dwarf conventional armored vehicles, and typically contain multiple weapon systems which can rival the firepower found in an entire squadron of common Federation tanks.  While rare, and tactically limited due to their slower speed and massive fuel requirements in the field, there is no denying their effectiveness in combat once brought to bear.

The Morning Star Mk.1 is a relic from a time when humanity struggled with the alien technologies they were facing on the far-flung battlefields of a hostile galaxy.  Before the technology was successfully miniaturized, Thermal Cannons were massive, slow-to-fire weapons obtained through dubious trades with the Grudd Mercantile guilds.  These weapons provided the raw power needed to combat the advanced defenses Terran forces were facing, especially against super heavy units.  Because the Morning Star was essentially a heavy vehicle hunter, the slow rate of fire of it's main armament meant that additional anti-armor weapon systems needed to be added to ensure that it remained effective between charges.  To this end - a single Cerebus Tank Destroyer Missile was added to the exterior of the tank, along with a rack of 4 anti-armor rockets - neither of which required much space within the hull, which was completely consumed by the generators required for the Thermal Destroyer Cannon.  The result was a bizarre, weapon-laden monster of a tank which quickly became feared across Terran-controlled space.

Since it's creation, thermal weapon technology has advanced to the point where it is now far more reliable, smaller, and less energy consuming.  The newer Morning Star Mk.2 features a double-barreled Thermal Destroyer, which fires far faster - making the supplemental (and dangerous) missile systems of the Mk.1 redundant, so they were removed and replaced with heavy laser cannon turrets typically found on other Terran Super Heavy Vehicles.  The Morning Star Mk.1 has not been produced in over two decades now - though they can still be found in Terran armies where their incredibly powerful armament remain as effective as ever.
